Introduction to Heat Hog
Have you ever considered how much heat your refrigeration plant throws into the atmosphere? Stand in front of the unit the heat you can feel could be used to heat water. Capturing the waste heat and turning it into a valuable resource is the Heat Hog principle.
When people think about de-carbonising the heating of water, they automatically think about installing a heat pump, not realising that they already have one. A refrigeration system is a heat pump moving heat from inside a refrigeration cabinet to the outside. So why buy and have the expense of running a heat pump when you already have one.
How does it work
In simple terms a “Heat Hog” is installed in the discharge line (the hot pipe) and instead of it going to the condenser to be blown into the atmosphere it passes through a specially designed internal heat exchanger which captures the heat and uses it to heat water.
To put things in perspective for every 1kW of heat energy that is rejected a Heat Hog system can produce 20 litres of hot water.
Benefits of Heat Hog
- Free hot water
- Substantial reduction in carbon emissions
- Cost saving
- A plug and play retro fit solution. The systems come with all the components all that is needed is the refrigeration and water connections.
- High efficiency heat exchanger that can recover all the waste heat.
- Twin wall design which conforms to BS1717 a requirement when heating potable water. More details
- Rapid paybacks
